The Mackenzie is Out of the Bag!

Wow! It has been over a month since I have last written, so let me give you this word of advice: Don't get two puppies during the last couple of months of the semester! It has been non-stop puppy and homework since the middle of November! (And puppies eating homework, more on that later.)

But wait, I said "puppies" even though the last post talked about one puppy. Since my fiance is a follower of this blog, I couldn't let the Mackenzie out of the bag until I got her. I couldn't just get one puppy, especially when it comes to the uber-social doxies. While "Ty" (henceforth known as Doppelbock) would have been perfectly happy being an only child, I couldn't stop thinking about the little dark chocolate pup that I had to scroll past every time I wanted to look at Doppelbock. When I received an unexpected windfall from work, I decided to surprise my fiance with two puppies! I called the breeder and found out that "Rocky" (henceforth known as Mackenzie) was still available. Not only that, if I bought one I received $50 off the second one which meant that I could actually afford the drive to get them! (I live north of Chicago and the puppies were located near St. Paul.)

I was so excited to surprise my fiance with the second puppy, but I was also in for a surprise as well. Now, anyone who looks at the name "Rocky" would expect the puppy to be a boy, I know I did. I was terribly excited to get two boys because that it what I had growing up. Imagine my surprise when I found out that Mackenzie had lady bits instead of male bits! The breeder asked me if that was ok, and I looked at her picture online and, well... I'll let you try and see if you could say no to this face!

She looked so sad and shy, she was practically begging me to take her home! I could hear her little puppy voice saying "Please don't leave me without my brother!" I was excited because I knew my little Doppelbock would be able to bring her out of her shy little shell. Again, this was another thing I got wrong. More on that a little later.

So with the money paid and the deal in place, I went with my sister to pick them up. Like most reputable breeders, this one is located in the middle of nowhere to ensure that the dogs have lots of room to run. I was very impressed by how well the dogs were kept, and how well mannered the dogs were. As you doxie owners know, there are two types of dachshunds; the bad mannered and the good mannered. There is almost always no in between, and usually you are more prone to get the badly behaved ones.

When I arrived at the house, I was greeted by the owner's daughter, who said she would bring the puppies right out. Two seconds later, a little 3 year old girl came walking out holding my future puppies. I wish I would have taken a picture! The puppies were holding on for dear life as much as the little girl was. When she set them down, Doppelbock (the boy) ran behind me and began to shake while Mackenzie (the girl) hopped right up onto my lap and began giving me puppy kisses with vigor! Her tail was wagging so hard that she wagged herself right off my lap! All the while, Doppelbock huddled behind me, whimpering slightly. Well, I was wrong about Mackenzie being the shy one!

So we grabbed the puppies and puppy packs and headed back home. The puppies lasted the entire five hour drive without having one accident, and four out of the five hours they slept. When we stopped at the rest stops (which was frequent because my sister has the bladder of a ground squirrel) I would place the cage next to me and open the door. Again, Doppelbock huddled in the carrier while Mackenzie charged forth in order to plant her puppies kisses all over anyone who would allow it.

Now, I had told my fiance about getting the second dog shortly before I went to get them so it wasn't a total surprise. However, when he saw them it looked like Christmas had come early! They cautiously walked out of the carrier and then ran right towards my fiance. I looked at him and he looked at me and without saying a word we could tell what we both were thinking. "What the heck do we do now!?"

I knew what I wanted to do. Before they became too independent and less likely to participate, I took pictures for the family Christmas card!

As you all know, the only time to get an untrained dog to pose for pictures like this is the get them after a five hour car ride and right before bed. And after this picture, I placed them in their kennel and they slept through the night.

And by slept through the night, I meant slept until about 2am. Unfortunately for my fiance I can sleep through the apocalypse, so he had a rough couple of weeks. We were so proud of the puppies because they only woke up during the night the first few days. Now, they go to be with me at one in the morning and wake us up a 9:30 am. How nice is that?

Well, this summarizes the first couple of weeks with the puppies. The next installment will include their first doctor's appointment, potty training, puppy school and the little quirks that we have been discovering! Oh, and how they ate my homework.

Anticipation and the Aerospace Industry

All right, there is a lot of news on the puppy front tonight! First, we got an updated picture of Doppelbock:
Yes, he has his little tongue hanging out! :) I swear, these next 15 days are going to go so slow knowing that I have this cute little guy waiting for me!

We decided to go to PetSmart today and we got quite the indoctrination into the dog world, and boy, is it expensive! The breeder told us what kind of food she has been feeding them, so we decided that would be the best for us to feed him as well. It is called "Wellness: Just for Puppy", and I have heard nothing but good things about it. However, all these "good things" didn't bother to mention that it costs $53 per bag! Granted, it is a 30 lbs bag and a 5 lbs dog, but still! When I think back to all of that stuff that went down a few years ago with the Chinese dog food and all the deaths, $53 for a little piece of mind doesn't seem to be that expensive at all.

We also picked up a bed and a little sweater. Again, I don't think dogs know how good they have it sometimes. When I felt how soft and comfy this bed felt, I seriously took a look to see if they had something my size.

I am also pretty excited that Doppelbock is a small dog because it gives me the chance to buy him clothes and not have to hear about it from the fiance all of the time. My cat, God rest his soul, LOVED wearing the cute little clothes I got him but my fiance would always give me hell for it. Now, we have a tiny little dog who will get cold and who will need sweaters. Yay!

So where does the aerospace industry come into all of this? Well, we got Doppelbock a tag at the pet store as well today. I figured it would be the typical engraving machine, but this machine was awesome! It wasn't the traditional engraving machine. This one used lasers. LASERS! I couldn't believe how it worked! The light just travelled over the tag and the letters appeared... When I read the instructions, they said the tag and its clear cover was an invention of the aerospace industry. What an age we live in!

I totally want to get another one just to see the machine work again! We had to get a really tiny tag because Doppelbock is so small. Maybe one day we could get a little brother or sister for him so that he won't be lonely and we can make another tag!

That is all for now. There isn't much left to do other than puppy proof the house, pick up some food, get a kennel and make the house nice and welcoming for the new member of our family!

Success!

Good news! We are now the proud parents of "Ty", who we will promptly rename "Doppelbock" once we get him home. Take a look at this little guy:

We get to pick him up on the 18th of November and I am so excited! I get the honor of picking him up since my fiance will be at work, so I have to try and remain calm the entire 4.5 hour drive to get him. I may have to rely on cruise control in order to stop myself from covering the distance with a time worthy of a land-speed record.

I am beginning to write out a list of everything we have to do between now and then, and the list keeps growing! So far the big ones are getting the right puppy food, getting a bed and puppy-proofing the house. Relatives have donated a kennel for us which is a big help, and the breeder is giving us a nice package of puppy goods to supplement the rest of the needs. Puppy proofing the house is going to be fun because it isn't even human proofed yet. My fiance is an avid baseball card collector, and his baseball cards are beginning to colonize the living room. They are a few steps away from forming a government and seceding from the household, so we really need to get those under control and up out of reach. Then there is my stuffed animal addiction... It is a minor addiction that takes up quite a bit of space in the bedroom. These tasty puppy morsels are just lying there begging to be chewed up, so I need to find a place to put them as well.

I can't help but picture how fun those first few days are going to be. I finally get to be the person at the highway rest stop playing with their dog after being cooped up in the car for a couple of hours. (Although, most likely he will sleep a good portion of the way home.) We get to go to PetSmart and walk the him around. Finally, people will be petting and talking about my dog instead of me and my fiance talking about theirs. I have been mentally taking note of all the cute sweaters I can get for him when we walk him in the winter, and also researching the best ways to train him.

And then there is the Doxie races at German Fest! After all these years of attending as a spectator, we will finally be able to participate! I know in all likelihood Doppelbock will be all excited at the starting line, the flag will drop and he will take two steps and roll around in the grass some but we won't care. We will finally have our little man!

Let the Madness Begin!

Hello, my name is Jo and I am addicted to dachshunds. I love everything about the little guys, from their stubby little legs to their dignified, regal faces. My fiance and I have been talking about getting a doxie for quite a long time, however we were unable to get one. Now that we are living in a house and our anti-dog cat has passed on (God rest his little crotchety soul) we find ourselves in the position to finally adopt the dog of our dreams!

To say initiating this process has been difficult is an understatement! We found a great breeder with a wonderful track record and beautiful miniature doxies. There is just one problem, she won't get back to us! We fell in love with a little man on her site by the name of "Ty." Ty is a long haired, red doxie who looks like he is going to be a devilish little critter. I swear, he has this devious glint in his eyes that makes all the stuffed animals in our house begin to write their wills! We contacted the breeder and she has been slow to respond to us. In this age of instant technological gratification, I want to get confirmation now! I just need the email that says "congrats, you have adopted Ty, pay with paypal and come pick him up in two weeks." Hopefully by tomorrow the email will be waiting in my inbox.

Until then, I am in doxie parent limbo. Thankfully my fiance has been more calm about this than I have been and he has convinced me that nothing will stop us from getting our little Ty. To keep my mind off of the uncertainty, I began to research everything about doxies and puppies. I found a lot of forums about doxies and the nuances of owning doxies. This has inspired me to chronicle my doxie adventures from day one... Well negative day one until we find that email in the inbox.

Thank you for reading my blog and thanks for coming along with me on my in-doxie-nation into the elite club of dachshund owners!
